Visitors Guide

Welcome! The City of Corsicana (Corsicana), the county seat of Navarro County, is a charming community located in Northeast Central Texas. This growing community is rich in heritage and flourishing with friendly people. Corsicana is located 53 miles to the southeast of the Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex area, and 54 miles northeast of Waco. Corsicana is strategically positioned along I-45, US Highway 287, Texas State Highway 31, and Texas State Highway 22. You will find the residents of Corsicana to be friendly and courteous with many community contacts readily available to assist you in any way.

History! Corsicana was established in 1848 to serve as the seat of government for Navarro County, which the first Texas Legislature had created two years earlier. The County was named after Jose Antonio Navarro, a Texas patriot. When asked what the new town should be called, Navarro replied, "Call it Corsicana after the island of Corsica, the birthplace of my father." Corsicana was a typical post-Civil War cottton town in the black lands of northeast central Texas. The City first adopted its Home Rule Charter in 1917 and last amended in May 2007.

In 1894 oil was discovered by accident only blocks from Corsicana's business district as drillers were completing an artesian well to expand the city's water supply. Within six years 500 oil wells operating within the city limits were producing 800,000 barrels of crude annually, making Corsicana the site of the first commercial oil field in Texas. Today the 26,000+ residents of Corsicana take great pride in their rich history.

Other historic information concerning the many "firsts" taking place in Corsicana include:

  • Corsicana is where oil was first discovered west of the Mississippi: thus Corsicana became the first Texas oil boom town, and one of Texas' wealthiest cities.
  • In 1897 the state's first oil refinery was built by a new local company called Magnolia Petroleum Company (known today as Mobil). Another local startup, The Texas Company (Texaco) began shortly thereafter.
  • Corsicana was one of the first cities in Texas to use natural gas for lighting and fuel.
  • Lyman T. Davis first delivered his famous chili in downtown Corsicana in 1895. He started canning his chili in 1921 and named it "Wolf Brand" after his pet wolf. A picture of the wolf is still found on the label to this day. The company is now owned by the Quaker Oats Company.

Arts, Entertainment, and Culture! If it's in town --- it's downtown! The Arts and Entertainment District is located in the heart of the historic Corsicana Downtown District on 6th Avenue between Beaton Street and Main Street. Take a leisurely stroll through downtown Corsicana and you can enjoy the arts and live entertainment found at the Palace Theater, the Warehouse Living Arts Center, Navarro Council of the Arts, and Martin's Music Hall. From the Corsicana Downtown District, travel only five (5) minutes drive time to the west end district of Corsicana to visit the Navarro College campus where you can spend hours touring the unsurpassed Pearce Civil War Museum, the unique Western Art Gallery, and the incredible Cook Center Planetarium. Both the Pearce Civil War Museum and the Western Art Gallery are conveniently located on the Navarro College campus in the Cook Education Center.

Quality Education Opportunities Abound! Corsicana features excellent opportunities for quality education offered within our community ranging from Pre-Kindergarten to graduate degrees. The Corsicana Independent School District (CISD) has approximately 5,700 students and 800 staff members; Corsicana ISD is a 4A district located in a community of over 26,000.  The district consists of four elementary campuses, one dual language campus, one intermediate, one middle, and one high school, and one alternative education campus.

The Corsicana Independent School District (CISD) was recently honored by the Texas Education Agency with 11 Gold Performance Awards for the 2009-2010 school year.

The entire CISD and Corsicana High School earned Recognized status in the State of Texas school districts’ standardized tests.

The CISD currently has three Exemplary campuses (Bowie, Sam Houston and Drane), and four Recognized campuses (Fannin, Carroll, Navarro and Corsicana High School).

To achieve Commended status, 30 percent or more of the students at the campus scored at or above the TAKS commended performance standard on last year’s state assessment. Campuses achieving that percentage receive Gold Performance Acknowledgement.

The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program has been implemented by Corsicana High School (CHS) for approximately one hundred sixty (160) selected students enrolled in CHS. AVID, a nationally recognized student development program that began in 1980 in San Diego, California, successfully prepares students from fourth through twelfth grades for college eligibility. AVID targets those students that academically fall in the middle, but are falling short of their academic potential. AVID has a proven track record of bringing out the best in students, and in closing the achievement gap.

The Success Through Active Role-modeling (STAR) program was created by local businesspeople and professionals in an effort to fully support the Corsicana Independent School District (CISD) and the AVID students. The STAR program, a sub-committee of the Corsicana and Navarro County Chamber of Commerce, was created with the intent to support local junior high and high school students by tapping into the talents and interests of other businesspeople and professionals. STAR proactively recruits adult role models who will support a student's interests and noted aptitude in any field or endeavor by encouraging them to successfully navigate a pre-designed educational plan including the completion of high school, and the pursuit of additional training and/or education to improve and enhance that student's quality of life. Additional information regarding the STAR program may be found by visiting the STAR official web site. Also, you may left-click on STAR to download the brochure for the STAR program.

Viable Options in Community Endeavors, Inc. (VOICE) was established in Corsicana in 1992 by Lois Jean Hart as a Texas nonprofit corporation. A small group of citizens began meeting together to find solutions to the problems that existed locally. The group identified needs in the community and developed a plan to help the local children strengthen protective factors that encourage positive lifestyles and reduce risk factors contributing to negative lifestyles.
The group began providing programs and services for at-risk youth living in Corsicana. Utilizing a small staff and many volunteers, an after-school and a summer program were started at the Martin Luther King Community Center to teach and reinforce skills that would assist these youth in succeeding academically and socially.
